A Region of Castles
The Drachenburg castle is located at the top of the Drachenfels in Königswinter. A dream castle with a unique panoramic view onto the Rhine. Starting at Königswinter, a steep hiking trail takes you up to the castle - or you can opt for the more convenient route and take the Drachenfels railway.
The 324m-high Wolkenburg mountain was the location of a castle by the same name that doesn't exist anymore. The hike of 1,5 hours to get there starts right at our doorstep.
The Löwenburg is a medieval ruin on the 455m-hight mountain of the same name. After the Great Ölberg mountain, this is the second highest mountain in the Siebengebirge.

The Wasserburg was built inside the city walls and served as a fortress. Because of its central location in the city's old town, the castle is a popular spot among tourists.
The Rolandseck castle at Remagen's Rolandwerth district was a hilltop castle on the Rhine. Together with the opposing castles Drachenfels and Wolkenburg, it was protecting the southern border of Cologne's archbishopric. Over centuries it was destroyed in wars and earthquakes - only one last window remains: the Rolandsbogen.

Poppelsdorf Palace with botanical Garden
The famous builder Balthasar Neumann was commissioned to erect a castle on the ruins of a water castle. In 1818, it was re-assigned to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and has since then accommodated its natural sciences collections. The castle's garden was converted into a botanical garden and is rich in species and one of the oldest gardens in the world.
